A new study suggests that red wine can actually prevent gum problems from developing. This is according to a study by the scientists from Université Laval in Quebec, Canada. Their study suggests that polyphenols, a component in red wine has properties that can ward off periodontal diseases. According to the research polyphenols, which you can get from red grape seeds can offset a compound known to be responsible for destroying tissues that lead to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a disease where the tissues around the teeth swell, the gums shrink and this causes the teeth to become loose.

Aside from the dental care advantage we can get from red wine, it is also known to be good for the heart. Red wine also has cancer-fighting properties and contributes to a person’s life expectancy; just like fruits, green and leafy vegetables and green tea. However, as with everything, too much of something becomes toxic. It is suggested that you drink not more than two glasses a day to enjoy the health benefits it brings.

It’s not just alcohol that you can’t drink too much of. Beverages that are high in sugar content are culprits for your teeth. Schools across the US have started banning sodas in school to fight obesity and tooth decay in children. This is not limited to sodas. Fruit juices that are too sweet are also frowned upon. But if you really want to drink a soda or sweet juice, just rinse your mouth with warm water afterwards. If you are able to brush your teeth right away, that’s even better. Or just learn to love water.
