Modern denstistry has brought us new options for dental fillings. One of them is Composite fillings. They are colored dental fillings that imitate the color of your natural teeth. Before, the only options you have for filling are gold, silver and porcelain fillings. But now you can get a more natural look.

Composite fillings are made of microscopic plastic and ceramic resin. There is another kind of colored filling – resin ionomer. They can also release fluoride into the tooth.

Composite dental fillings not only looks good, but is functional as well. They make the teeth structurally strong and they seal cracks in the tooth; protecting you form sensitivity. The procedure for putting dental fillings begin with the removal of the decayed portion of the tooth. Then a mild acid solution is applied on the surface of the tooth so it will be ready for the filling. The area is brushed using a bonding solution. Then dental composite is applied. The dentist chooses a color that is nearest to the color of your tooth. A chemical is used to harden the composite and a special light is used to treat it. And the last step is to put polish to make it look better.

Are composite fillings durable? Yes. Resin materials are durable and they stick well to your tooth. However when compared to gold or silver, it may not be as strong. Like any other kind of dental filling, it still needs to be checked and replaced from time to time. So, regular dental visits are important. And do your part to maintain good oral hygiene.
