If you are conscious about cleanliness and sanitation, you’re most probably familiar with biofilms. A biofilm is a microscopic community that develop from fungi and bacteria that grow in water or places where water is often present like tubes and faucets. It may occur in dental waterlines; but don’t worry. Dental offices are vigilant when it comes to this.  To better understand them, consider these information about biofilms.

As you have noticed when you sit on a dental chair, there are flexible tubes connected to it where water flows to your mouth. These tubes are called dental waterlines. Fresh and clean water goes through them daily. However, water that’s left on them may breed bacteria and other forms of microorganism. If patients have the responsibility to keep their teeth and mouth clean, dentists on the other hand, has the responsibility to keep these waterlines clean and safe for their patients.

As physicians, dentists are knowledgeable when it comes to health concerns. They take extra measure to combat the development of biofilms. The tubes were made in a way that water will only flow into the mouth and be instantly drained. The chair has the capability to monitor the movement of water.

All known methods are done to make sure no one gets sick because of biofilms. So far, no one is reported to have gotten sick due to contaminated dental waterline. If there is presence of bacteria, it is not enough to cause patients to fall ill. After all, bacteria is everywhere. This is why our bodies were created with an immune system.

Don’t readily accept what you hear or see on TV. If you hear any news about biofilms, don’t be scared.  Verify any information you think poses a threat on you and your family. It might not be true after all. But one thing’s for sure, when it comes to your health we’re on top of it.
